Malaysia in crisis: PM resigns, what’s next?

Yesterday, Malaysia’s Dr Mahathir Mohamad did something many in the country could not have expected – he resigned as the country’s prime minister. After subsequently delaying his exit as the country’s administrator, the shock most of the country was feeling was understandable.Following Dr Mahathir’s resignation, it was up to His Royal Highness, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King of Malaysia) to decide whether to accept his resignation or not. The King did.

BREAKING: Malaysian PM submits resignation

Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, at 94 the world's oldest leader, submitted his resignation to the king on Monday, his office said, after a bid by his political partners to bring down the government.Dr Mahathir "has sent a resignation letter as prime minister of Malaysia", said a statement from his office. – AFP

Islamophobia in Muslim-majority Malaysia

Local media in Malaysia recently reported that Malaysian United Indigenous Party (Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia) Youth executive council member, Muhammad Muzammil Ismail as urging the country’s Muslim youth to play a more active role in overcoming Islamophobia. Speaking to Malaysia’s national news agency, Bernama, ahead of the Youth Kuala Lumpur Summit 2019, Muhammad Muzammil said that, in this endeavour, the country’s Muslim youth would do well to use social media platforms wisely.

Is Malaysia moving towards the far-right?

“Malaysia, Truly Asia” is the well-known slogan that Tourism Malaysia – the government agency under the country’s Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture – uses in hopes of capturing the essence of the country’s unique diversity. That’s fair considering the country is home to people from a multitude of different ethnicities and religious backgrounds. Today, however, the warm embrace of the country’s multiculturalism seems to have gone cold.
