Pandemic Causing Child Marriage To Spike

The coronavirus crisis has caused millions to lose their jobs and sources of income. Reports of shuttered businesses and a global recession have headlined the news since the virus first appeared in Wuhan, China. The World Bank has predicted that 24 million fewer people will escape poverty in Southeast Asia this year as a result of the pandemic.

Is Indonesia about to end child marriage?

The region’s most populous country, Indonesia, could be close to ending child marriages soon. On Thursday, Indonesia’s Constitutional Court ruled that the 16 years old minimum age requirement for women to marry is unconstitutional and that the government needs to change the minimum age for brides. The petition to the high court was filed by three child bride survivors with the backing of a coalition of campaigners and organisations against child marriage.
