Govt's final offer for Kg Baru land

The government yesterday offered Kampung Baru landowners RM1,000 per square foot (psf) in yet another bid to secure a land deal. The offer is limited to a maximum of RM850 in cash, with the remaining amount to be delivered by way of shares in a special purpose vehicle (SPV) that will be set up to facilitate redevelopment. Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad said that the price was the government’s final and best offer. – New Straits Times

Activist Jolovan Wham loses appeal against conviction for organising assembly without permit

The High Court on Friday dismissed an appeal by civil rights activist Jolovan Wham against his conviction and sentence for organising an event that featured speakers including Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong. Wham, who is currently on bail, intends to bring the case further to the Court of Appeal to determine questions of law of public interest, said his lawyer Eugene Thuraisingam. – The Straits Times

Council tackles teacher oversupply

The Teachers' Council of Thailand is urging institutions offering teacher certification programmes and the Higher Education Science Research and Innovation Ministry to adopt a so-called "closed system" for training teachers, to curb an oversupply of teachers in the country's basic education system. – Bangkok Post

Prabowo tight-lipped on first day

Gerindra Party chairman Prabowo Subianto cut a somewhat more reserved figure than usual on Thursday when he took over the Defence Ministry from his predecessor Ryamizard Ryacudu. In contrast to his outspoken position on the presidential election campaign trail when Prabowo vehemently lambasted the weakness of the Indonesian defence sector, the newly minted minister was much more reticent, saying he had to study all matters first before laying out his plans. – The Jakarta Post

Cambodian economic growth expected to be highest in ASEAN

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has projected Cambodia’s economic growth to be highest in the ASEAN region despite facing several challenges. In its latest Regional Economy Outlook published on Tuesday, the IMF predicted that Cambodia’s economic growth would remain strong at seven per cent this year before easing to 6.8 percent next year. – The Cambodia Daily

Control swine fever spread, Duterte orders
