Rough patch for SEA game squash athletes

The Malaysia Organising Committee (MASOC) regrets that an accident happened this morning involving two buses carrying squash athletes and officials from their hotel to the competition venue at the Kuala Lumpur Sports City.

MASOC Sports & Technical Committee Secretary Low Beng Choo said the athletes involved in these unfortunate accidents were from Myanmar, Thailand and the Philippines. MASOC medical committee is said to attend the medical situation, while some of the affected athletes are being attended to at the Games Medical Centre (GMC).

Meanwhile, all matches this morning have been suspended in to the bus that was carrying squash players involved in the accident.

Team managers held an urgent meeting at 2.00pm (local time) to discuss on the revised competition scheduled.

Matches that are not affected will resume with the approval of team managers at 3.00pm (local time) today.

The Royal Malaysian Police (RMP) and the Road Transport Department (RTD) are now investigating the incident.

Malaysia’s Department of Investigation and Traffic Enforcement in Kuala Lumpur, said the incident happened at about 7.30am at Kuala Lumpur-Seremban Highway this morning.

The busses carried squash players from Thailand, Myanmar and the Philippines from La Meridian Hotel in Putrajaya and heading to the national stadium in Bukit Jalil. The incident occurred when a motorcycle diverged in front of one of the busses and caused it to brake abduptly. Nine squash players including a squash coach was taken to Institut Sukan Negara (ISN) clinic for treatment.

Other incident during the ASEAN games is the Indonesian flag mistakes in the official souvenir book for the opening ceremony of the 29th SEA games during the opening ceremony of SEA games. The Chairman of the Malaysian SEA games Organising Committee and Minister of Youth and Sports YB Brig Gen Khairy Jamaluddin and Indonesian counterpart Imam Nahrawi had a courtesy call to apologise on the incident made on Sunday.
