Balance needed in Cambodia-China relations

Cambodia and China recently marked 60 years of ties of joint cooperation with a visit by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang to Phnom Penh. Both countries signed a series of 19 bilateral agreements providing for Chinese investments into Cambodia’s infrastructure, healthcare and agriculture sectors, among others. The two countries go back a long way, beginning when Cambodia chose to acknowledge China’s legitimacy over Taiwan’s when the latter claimed independent statehood.

Southeast Asia’s lakes need saving before it’s too late

Indonesia is home to 521 natural lakes and about 100 reservoirs, covering an area of approximately 21,000 km². The total volume of water held across the country is approximately 500 km³. The largest lake, by both area and volume, is Lake Toba in Sumatra. It holds about 240 km³ of freshwater, and is the largest lake body in Southeast Asia.Lake Toba is an immense volcanic lake covering an area of 1,707 km², making it even bigger than Singapore.

Why Cambodia’s opposition failed?

Cambodian Prime Minister, Hun Sen’s authoritarian crackdown has rendered his critics defenceless. His last major blow to the opposition was the dissolution of the main opposition party, the Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP). It’s not long before midnight and an outlaw trawler has been spotted. The captain – a weather-gnarled old fisherman wearing just boxer shorts – winces as flashlights illuminate his face.
