Lao makes its mark on the Mekong river

The Lao government has recently announced plans to launch a new port checkpoint located along the Mekong River in Thailand, early next year. The port, known as the Ban Mom port,will be situated in Ton Pheung, Bokeo province – 17 km North of Chiang Rai’s Chiang Saen district in Thailand. The development and operation of the port for the next 40 years has been contracted to a Thai firm.

China, ASEAN hold joint naval drills as tensions ease

China and members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have held their largest-ever joint maritime rescue exercise, signalling a lull in South China Sea tensions. The drill on Tuesday simulated a collision between a Chinese passenger ship and a Cambodian cargo vessel off south China's Guangdong province. It involved about 1,000 rescuers aboard 20 ships and three helicopters, according to reports in Chinese state media late Tuesday.

OCBC's profit rose 12% on lending, wealth and insurance

Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp., Southeast Asia’s second-largest lender, reported higher third-quarter profit on increased revenue from its lending, wealth management and life-insurance businesses.Net income rose 12 percent to S$1.06 billion (780 million dollars) in the three months ended September 30, the Singaporean bank said in a filing on Thursday.
