Final days for many national airlines

On Tuesday, Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad told reporters he's studying whether to sell, shut down or refinance Malaysia Airlines Bhd., the troubled national carrier. A decision needs to be made soon. In 2018, the perpetually money-losing airline accounted for about half of the US$1.5 billion in losses suffered by its parent, Khazanah Nasional Bhd., Malaysia's sovereign wealth fund.On purely economic terms, Mahathir’s decision should be easy.

Indonesia's Garuda targets profit in 2018

Garuda Indonesia is targeting a return to profit next year after a loss in 2017 as the flag carrier works to reduce expenses and operations improve.The airline is predicting a profit of 75 million dollars in the second half ending December but won’t be able to post a profit for the 12-month period following a larger loss in the first six months of the year, Chief Executive Officer Pahala Mansury said.
