The ASEAN Summit is a semi-annual meeting held by the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in relation to economic, political, security and socio-cultural development. This summit is also a platform for regional and world leaders to gather and discuss about various problems, issues and plans in order to benefit the 630 million citizens of ASEAN.
ASEAN has come a long way since 1967, celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2017. This year, the 32nd ASEAN Summit will be held in Singapore from 25-28 April. The Summit hopes to promote innovation and help member states grow their economies by using technology to make ASEAN a more dynamic, connected community and a better home for the region’s future generations.
The 10 members of ASEAN, namely Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, all share a common interest in promoting peace, stability and security in the Southeast Asian region, for the benefit of all their peoples.
The 2018 ASEAN Chairmanship logo embodies this spirit. Its modern, stylised design was formed by connecting respective members’ capitals. The links signify the collective resilience of an inter-connected ASEAN in pursuit of a common purpose.
The logo’s pink and lavender colours are a mix of red, blue, and white. Red symbolises strength and equality, blue represents trust and stability, while white is a symbol of peace. Combining these colours demonstrates ASEAN’s unity and innovativeness. In addition, lavender is commonly associated with dignity, passion and vitality, representing a dynamic, innovative and vibrant ASEAN Community.
Resilience and Innovation
The Chairmanship tagline for 2018 is “Resilient and Innovative”. It encapsulates the vision for ASEAN to be united in the face of growing uncertainties in the global strategic landscape. ASEAN must also be adaptable and forward looking, so that it’s members can harness opportunities and manage challenges from disruptive digital technologies, equip their citizens with skills to build a future-ready ASEAN and boost their capabilities to make their cities smarter.
