UN: Myanmar violence may have killed over 1,000

More than 1,000 people may already have been killed in Myanmar's Rakhine state, mostly members of the Muslim Rohingya minority, a senior UN (United Nations) representative told AFP (Agence France-Presse) on Friday – around twice the government's figure."Perhaps about a thousand or more are already dead," said Yanghee Lee, the UN special rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar.

Bangladesh buries Rohingya shot dead in Myanmar

Five Rohingya shot dead in Myanmar have been buried in Bangladesh at a mass funeral attended by hundreds of people after their relatives carried their bodies across the border, police said Thursday.The Rohingya villagers who carried the victims' bodies said they had been killed by the Myanmar military on Wednesday, Bangladesh border guard, commander Manzurul Hasan Khan, told AFP.

Aid for Rohingyas as tension mounts

Nearly 168,000 Rohingyas have fled Myanmar in the last five years as a result of violence and desperation, according to a new report on forced displacement in South-East Asia published by the UNHCR (UN Refugee Agency). Many Rohingyas seek help by fleeing into neighbouring countries like Bangladesh and Malaysia.

Timeline: North Korea’s nuclear programme
