India's Modi threads path between rising China, uncertain US

United States (US) Defense Secretary James Mattis described India as the “fulcrum’’ of security in the Indo-Pacific region as he traveled this week to an annual security conference in Singapore, attended for the first time by an Indian leader.But if Mattis was hoping that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would use the platform to join the US, Japan and Australia - a grouping known as the Quad - in a more muscular challenge to China’s regional expansion, he was disappointed.

Taiwan’s pivot to Southeast Asia

The New Southbound Policy was meant to “…realign Taiwan’s role in Asian development, seek new directions and momentum for the country’s new stage of economic development, and create future value.”This Taiwanese policy aims to establish a relationship between Taiwan and the 10 ASEAN countries, as well as six countries in South Asia including India, Australia and New Zealand.

Challenges for the Belt and Road Initiative in Vietnam

Lies, damn lies, and Vietnam's trade statistics

On April 17, Bloomberg reported that China had overtaken the United States as Vietnam’s largest export market. According to figures cited by the news organisation and tallied by the International Monetary Fund, Vietnam’s exports to China amounted to US$50.6 billion in 2017, compared to US$46.5 billion in exports to the US.If these numbers are accurate, they would represent a significant shift in the triangular relationship between Vietnam, China, and the US.
