Big fight in Jakarta

Tomorrow, Indonesian’s will go to the ballot box. For the first time in the country's history, the president, vice president, and members of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), will be elected on the same day with over 190 million eligible voters. 16 parties will be participating in the elections nationally, with four participating for the first time. This makes the 2019 election the biggest election ever in Indonesia’s history.

Indonesian elections: Conservatism versus moderation

Indonesia’s coming election has its heavy-metal-fan president Joko “Jokowi” Widodo - widely perceived as a moderate Muslim - in one corner and Prabowo Subianto, a former lieutenant general, in the other. This is the second time they will go head to head since 2014 when Prabowo held the support of the conservative Muslims in the country.

White doves or another black campaign?

Indonesia’s presidential election was officially kicked-off with the two contenders - Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Prabowo Subianto - releasing white doves and vowing a peaceful campaign period. Hopes are running high that the promise of peace that comes with this gesture continues during the months leading up to polling day in April next year. But if the 2014 election was anything to go by, then Indonesia will need to brace itself for a turbulent flight.

Jokowi’s challenger trails in social media

Indonesian President Joko Widodo’s lone challenger in next year’s election, Prabowo Subianto, has a long way to go to catch up with the incumbent’s social media popularity as the candidates seek to seize early campaign momentum.Widodo, known as Jokowi, has 10.2 million followers on his personal Twitter account compared with 3.17 million for Subianto.
