2017 was a devastating year for countries most vulnerable to natural disasters. Throughout the year, a high frequency of catastrophic flooding, hurricanes, storms and wildfires ravaged the world, incurring double the economic loss and cost as opposed to similar disasters that occurred in 2016.

The grass in Vietnam may not be that green

In the Southeast Asian region, loss of area under natural forests is largely driven by natural resources extraction and demand for more land for production of food and other commodities. Earlier this year, progress tracking of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development goals for Southeast Asia revealed disappointing outcomes for Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15. The SDG 15 measures forests and forested land protection, restoration and sustainable use.

Vietnam to host F1 race in 2020

Vietnam will host a Formula One race in April 2020, Hanoi city officials said Thursday, becoming the third Southeast Asian nation to welcome top-flight racing as the franchise seeks to move into new markets.The race will be hosted in the capital city of Hanoi, with the circuit set to be unveiled at a gala next week, the Hanoi People's Committee said Thursday in an invite to the event.

Vietnam: Southeast Asia’s tourism star

In the first quarter of 2018, Southeast Asia saw a 9.4 percent increase in tourist arrivals, which is the largest number recorded amongst all regions. This figure exceeds the already robust six percent average growth for global tourism during the same period. Trafficked brides heading for China

The practice of “pulling wife”, bride kidnapping or marriage by capture is an old tradition among the rural Vietnamese. According to old custom, young girls are symbolically kidnapped and detained for two to three days by young boys, sometimes in collaboration with his family, to force a marriage negotiation with the girls’ parents. The girls’ parents could ask for her release or accept the marriage, following which the bride price – to be paid by the boy’s family – would be bargained.

Vietnam’s shrimp exports at risk

Vietnam is enjoying record numbers in shrimp exports but ironically faces tough barriers in its home market.Shrimp accounted for 46 percent of Vietnam’s total seafood exports in 2017, raking in US$3.8 billion out of US$8.3 billion worth of aquaculture exports in total. In 1Q18, shrimp exports brought in US$719 million in revenue.
