Duterte remains resolute despite low approval ratings

Philippine President, Rodrigo Duterte’s satisfaction ratings has dropped to its lowest since he assumed office according to an independent survey by Manila based pollster, Social Weather Stations (SWS). Compared to the first quarter of the year, Duterte’s net satisfaction ratings fell 11 percent to 45 percent dropping below his previous low of 48 percent in September 2017.“Net satisfaction” refers to the percentage of respondents who are satisfied minus those who are not.

Passage of Bangsamoro Basic Law is a step towards peace

Just a few days before the 17th Congress of the Philippines went on break, history was made on 31 May when the Philippines senate unanimously approved the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law. Hours earlier, the House of Representatives approved its own version of the BBL bill with a 221 to 11 vote. The BBL seeks to establish a proposed new autonomous political entity known as the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region, replacing the current Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

Supreme Court chief in the Philippines ousted in landmark decision

The Supreme Court of the Philippines ruled on Friday to remove Maria Lourdes Sereno as Chief Justice. The historic ruling was made in a special en banc session which saw the high tribunal ultimately vote 8-6 against Sereno and declare void her appointment as the country’s Chief Justice.The ruling is immediately executory but Sereno is expected to file an appeal against the decision.

The Philippines’ pivot to China

Philippine President, Rodrigo Duterte recently returned from China bearing gifts. The president had signed nine business agreements when he was there. “The nine business agreements signed during my visit yielded an estimated value of 9 to 8 billion dollars in investments. These are projected to generate more than 10,000 jobs for our countrymen and women,” Duterte said in his speech upon returning from China.
