Indonesia Confident About 5G Connectivity

While Indonesia may not have the best internet connectivity in Southeast Asia, one thing it is certainly doing well compared to some other ASEAN member states is providing 4G availability to its estimated population of over 260 million. A 2019 report by London-based Opensignal titled, “The State of Mobile Network Experience” revealed that after Singapore and Thailand, Indonesia performs the best in ASEAN in terms of providing 4G availability.

Internet inequality in the Philippines

This was what Opensignal - a London-based company that specialises in mapping wireless coverage – found out recently when it analysed the fluctuations in 4G download speeds that its users in the Philippines experience throughout the day across different regions.In its recent 5G Opportunity report, Opensignal analysed the wide fluctuations in 4G download speeds experienced throughout the day on networks in 77 countries around the world.

Indonesia excited about 5G, but…

There is little doubt about it, the fifth-generation cellular network frequency (5G) is in our near future. The recent ruckus surrounding the United States (US) and China-based multinational company Huawei should only serve to remind us of how inevitable that fact really is.While the reception for 5G has largely been welcoming, the technology does not come without its own set of complications.

Indonesia is too slow!

A recent analysis by discount code portal CupoNation Indonesia found that Indonesia ranks low in Southeast Asian countries in terms of fibre optic internet connection speeds, which heavily depends on a country’s infrastructure, geography, and many other factors. Being able to only provide a mere 200 megabytes per second (Mbps) to its internet users, Indonesia is placed fifth place out of six countries, only managing to outperform Cambodia.The sad fact is that this comes as no surprise.

4G just isn’t enough anymore

Recently, Opensignal - a London-based company that specialises in mapping wireless coverage - presented its first report titled “How 5G will solve the congestion problems of today's 4G networks”. In the report, the mobile analytics company examined 77 countries worldwide which included the ASEAN region.
