Bruneians' Insatiable Appetite For Cars

At a time when every Southeast Asian economy has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic – ASEAN member state Brunei reported close to an eight percent increase in car sales in the first five months of 2020. This is indicative of the insatiable appetite of Bruneians’ for cars. According to figures released by the ASEAN Automotive Federation, a total of 5,388 units of cars were sold in the Sultanate within that period, compared to 4,966 units sold within the same period last year.

Can VinFast boost Vietnam’s automotive market?

In June 2017, Vingroup, a Vietnamese conglomerate focusing on real estate development, retail, mobile and various services decided to diversify its business and launch Vietnam’s first domestic car manufacturer, VinFast. Not long after, in September 2017, VinFast opened its first manufacturing complex worth US$1.5 billion in the northern port city of Hai Phong, officiated by Nguyen Xuan Phuc, the Vietnamese Prime Minister himself.

Vinfast to stir up Vietnam’s automotive market

Last September, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc launched the construction of Vingroup’s automobile manufacturing complex in the northern port city of Hai Phong. The automobile manufacturing complex will be the production centre of Vietnam’s first national car, Vinfast. Bloomberg reported in September 2017 that conglomerate Vingroup plans to invest up to US$3.5 billion to build a manufacturing and research and development complex.
