Region’s digital economy exceeds expectations

Southeast Asia’s internet economy is slated to be worth more than US$240 billion by 2025 according to a joint study by Google and Singapore’s Temasek Holdings covering the six most advanced internet economies in the region – Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines. Previous projections foresaw a US$200 billion internet economy for the region by 2025.

Google fined record US$5 billion by EU

Google was fined 4.3 billion euros (US$5 billion) by the European Union (EU) and ordered to change the way it puts search and web browser apps on Android mobile devices, setting a global record for antitrust penalties.The penalty - the same amount the Netherlands contributes to the EU budget every year - is far higher than any other dished out by the United States (US), Chinese or other antitrust authorities.

Vietnam forces Facebook and Google to pick privacy or growth

Vietnam’s new cybersecurity law could force Alphabet Inc.’s Google and Facebook Inc. to choose between access to one of Asia’s fastest-growing digital economies and protecting their users’ privacy.The law, which goes into effect 1 January, 2019 after the National Assembly passed it this month, requires foreign internet companies to store data within the country and open local offices.

Google heats up Asian e-commerce race

Google’s latest move of investing in Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com reveals that the company is stepping up its game to make inroads in Asia. On Monday, tech conglomerate Google announced a strategic partnership with JD.com, China’s second-largest e-commerce company. Also known as Jingdong, JD.com generated over US$55 billion in revenue last year and currently boasts over 300 million active users. The company is currently the biggest competitor to Jack Ma’s Alibaba.

Singapore eyes dual-class share structure

The Singapore Exchange (SGX) entered into the final phase of consultation to allow dual-class share (DCS) structure listings on 28 March. It subsequently launched a public consultation for proposed safeguards to address the risks of expropriation and entrenchment. A DCS structure refers to the issuance of different classes of shares, one class of which carries heavier voting rights than the other.

High smartphone usage to boost ASEAN mobile commerce

Meanwhile mobile commerce is expected to ride on e-commerce growth as smartphone users account for more than 90% of Southeast Asian internet users, according to the same report.
