Smart cities, while not dominating discussions at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Foreign Ministers' Retreat in Singapore earlier this month, was nevertheless talked about. Singapore, which chairs ASEAN for 2018 under the theme of innovation and resilience has been a strong advocate of a network of ASEAN smart cities to be formed as part of its chairmanship goals.

Singapore to increase labour force productivity to counter aging demographics

Singapore’s economy expanded by 3.5% in 2017, according to estimates released by the Ministry of Trade and Industry earlier this month. Yet the percentage of its labour force aged over 60 years also rose from 6.1% in 2007 to 14.1% in 2017, according to a recent report by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM).The labour force participation rate (LFPR) in 2017 meanwhile dropped to 67.7% from 68% in 2016 according to MOM data.

ASEAN’s harmonisation towards healthcare

This year, the healthcare industry in the Asia-Pacific region is expected to grow at 11.1%, according to a report by Frost & Sullivan which makes it one of the fastest growing regions for healthcare in the world. On average, the global healthcare economy has an annual growth rate of 4.8%, the report added.This progressive growth is powered by a larger adoption of technology, innovative healthcare access programmes and delivery of care in and out of the hospital.
