Trafficking Still A Problem In Malaysia

Southeast Asia has been at war with human traffickers for a long time now and most reports have shown that this war is a difficult one to win. In 2015, mass graves of people believed to be Rohingya who were victims of human trafficking were discovered in the jungles north of Wang Kelian in an area called Wang Berma.

Malaysia’s stateless children

Earlier this year, a Kosovo-born football player, Liridon Krasniqi who plays for Malaysian football club Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) was naturalised and given a Malaysian citizenship. Many observers criticised the decision for granting a fast-tracked citizenship to the popular sportsman as thousands of other stateless people in Malaysia are still undocumented.

Battling childhood obesity in ASEAN

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the prevalence of childhood obesity has increased at an alarming rate globally. In 2016, the number of overweight children under the age of five was estimated to be over 41 million.Southeast Asia has seen an upward trend in childhood obesity during the last 10 to 15 years. An estimated 6.6 million children under five years are currently overweight in the region.

This year has been eventful and it’s still just the middle of March. The world greeted 2020 with paranoia and caution as the COVID-19 novel coronavirus spread around the globe. Southeast Asia’s baby dumping problem

Earlier this year, a new-born baby boy was found in a blood-stained, tied-up plastic bag in Singapore. He was still alive in the rubbish bin when authorities made the shocking discovery. Local police are still searching for the parents of the abandoned baby and they could face up to seven years imprisonment or a fine, or both for the crime. This is not the first case of baby dumping in Southeast Asia.
